Details of a Designer’s home

Following our readers’ request to reveal the appearance of our own living spaces we decided to show some bits and pieces of a designers home. In any design, details matter a lot and, therefore, in this article I am introducing the best items and details from my own home.

LOCATION & LAYOUT

My apartment is located in Lönnrotinkatu, close to Kamppi, right next to the marketplace of Hietalahti. The total area is approximately 50 m2, main space consists of a living room and a bedroom. A full-height glass brick wall separates the spaces. Meanwhile, the big windows open the view to the inner yard.

MATERIALS & STYLE

The floor of the apartment is light oak parquet, walls – simple white paint. Generally, the design of the apartment is industrial and raw, perfectly fitting the environment. A few years ago the building where the apartment is located has been transformed from industrial real estate into high quality rented apartments and office premises.

DETAILS & DECORATION

The apartment is very flexible and easily transforms according to the usage. In the living room, the boldest element is the dark leather sofa. The sofa is complemented with fun and cheerful colors from other objects. Important roles in the design play local and international iconic items. Products like the bean backs from Fatboy or an ultimate kitchen helper with a slick appearance – the KitchenAid.

Finnish design is represented in the space by the Double Bubble Lamp by Eero Aarnio, Block lamp by Harri Koskinen and Ultima Thule carafe by Tapio Wirkkala. All those objects are a small yet precious heritage, which I received from my grandfather.

My own paintings decorate the walls, including one especially controversial portrait of a pink poodle… However, my all-the-times-favorite is the red and black mysterious painting. It was born through a joint effort of our guests during the house warming party. Actually, by now we are already moving forward and looking for a new place to stay. Detailed report regarding the challenge of finding a perfect housing in Helsinki is coming soon, follow our Facebook page not to miss the next publication!..
